"I just found a set of Lyotard 23 platform pedals. One platform is broken near the rear edge, in the thin part just outside of the cleat area. Is it worth having this welded back together, or will it just break again? I thought about reinforcing with plate and machine screws, but there's really not enough room to use screws. I might try JB Weld and a plate reinforcement the width of the platform. "

Let the record show that I love Lyotard 23s. I consider them the neatest disposable pedals in the world. Let's face it, lads & lassies, if you used them long enough for real riding, the allow cage got loose around the steel barrel, and something eventually gave way. Let me tell you about (my) stupidity: Beloved Spouse and I left Cleveland, OH for Atlanta Ga on our touring bikes, with full camping gear and a deadline to make my father's 60th. 26 years ago this summer. Stupidity was having left her bike with 14 mm pedals. Sure enough, one of the Lyotard Berthets tried to self-destruct. No, there were no bike shops in the Appalachians with 14 mm pedals. Didn't find any taps, either, but basically we held it together with my generation's version of baling wire: radiator clamps. Got us to Atlanta, and there the pedal went off into the great yonder.

Long live the Berthet! Longer live the Phil Platform, a really neat design (anyone have a pair for my walls?)
