Pre war Nortons, among others used a vertical Sturmey Archer gearbox. After the war they started to make their own, called the laydown box because the shafts were horizontial, with the same gears and shafts. Later this box mutated into the AMC box used on Norton, Matchless and AJS. The gears and shafts still interchanged. I built a Triton special with a laydown Norton box (instead of the more normal Triumph) and 850 Commando internals from the mid 70s, fit, as they will fit a pre war S-A..
