Well there's no real difference between a track stem and a road stem other than the angle of the extension, with the ones that angle down called track stems. By this definition, most track riders use road stems in my experience. Also it seems to me almost all the adjustable stems I've seen had a horizontal extension and thus I'd term them road stems, which of course can be used on the track.

The Ambrosio alloy adjustable, which later became TTT, has a cool feature for us old guys: if you take the extension out, flip the quill around backwards and re-insert the extension, it now angles up by about 17 degrees instead of being level, destroying the vintage credibility but easing the back strain.

The stems Jeff Lyon makes are steel. (Note, it's Lyon, not Lyons as some people have posted.) Some feel they aren't real attractive, but the use of a square tube for the extension means that the bars can't slip in the "roll" direction like a Cinelli or others with a round extension can.

His website lists them as $89.95; http://www.lyonsport.com/stems.html but this is moot as he says he can't plate them anymore. If you and a few others buy them unplated and send them to Brian Baylis for plating they might be more or less expensive
