Yes, I remember that first plate (or rather, the fork bumper on it) was a death trap! I too don't know if he made any effort to contact owners of the original setup.
Even with the improved plate/bumper, it still had the capacity to unrake
your fork if the blade wasn't strong enough, but this is a feature of any
hub brake with a lot of stopping power.

Right, the bad ones are all one thickness, the better ones had the thicker section.
