Sorry...my mistake...I was thinking 105 but it was an STX. but I've only had four Shimano headsets...two Deores, an STX and 600.The STX has never setup and stayed put for me, and yes I'm quite certain it's built properly. I don't know how it is that your headsets last a long time. All of my shimano headsets indexed with a month...oh yeah I forgot, I'm over 220 lbs. I like steel headsets and I'll be damned if there are many available. I passed over a couple of campag ones at LaBicicletta (Toronto) several years ago and regretted it. Stronglight, TDC, Campy, Ofmega and even the old Tange were preferable to me. I liberate the steel headsets off of old english 3 speeds and roadsters for use in my commuters. They are free and extremely well made. I don't have a threadless steerer in my 20 some odd bikes.
Frankly, I don't like Shimano much. They overwhelm and destroy smaller innovative companies. That is business and I don't want to engage anyone in this thread. They make decent products and I still dislike them...call it vanity. I like to cobble my bikes together with a wide range of parts I've squirreled away, saved from previous mounts or salvaged from thrift store fodder. And yes there is the ocassional shimano crankset or caliper...just not many.
I don't mean to be anti-BOB or anything. I'm just finding greater delight in older frames and components these days. It may be directly related to my spending power these days (nil) but I've had my share of exotica...and sold it all off.
