Thanks for the history lesson, Bill. Yes, the book does seem to give a false impression of his career, but I've saved your post to add to my own cycling history files.
I was in awe of Eddy Merckx when I was a kid, but I always rooted for de Vlaeminck. He was a great rider and seemed a lot more human than Merckx.
