It is a coarse thread into the right side assembly that holds the freewheel, and yes, it pulls out far enough to allow the wheel to drop free. It then hits a detent and stops. There is also a little "Y' piece that mounts to the chainstay bridge, just to help locate the wheel properly.
The bivalents are elegant; Larry Black and I each brought ours to Cirque a year ago. There was a set there this year, too.
My understanding is that the racers adopted early, but abandoned when some of the early ones (3-piece shells) couldn't handle the torque. I have a friend, Jim Papadopoulos, who went (if I recall correctly) from 4 hubs with good spline sets to one...
