Hello, all.

I'm new to the CR list. I've been reading the digested version for about a week and I've had two messages from Dale regarding my lack of adherence to the name-and-home-town-at-the-end-of-a-posting rule.

So it seems that if I want to continue to read about the likelyhood of Campagnolo reissuing hoods for NR/SR levers OR find out more about dustbin Herses, then I better play along.

Who could say no to that?

Now for a little about me:

Name: Matthew Grimm - you can call me Matt

Email: matthewgrimm@yahoo.com

eBay handle: mateodelnorte

Birthdate: January 20th, 1956

Place of birth: Ceres, California

Philosophic note #1: Two wheels good - four wheels bad

First cycling memory: my mom pushing me on a two-wheeler down the street

First good bike: Columbia w/ Bendix 2-speed - if I had a magic wand, the first thing I would do would be to create an updated version of the Bendix 2-speed and give it an alloy shell with heat sink fins - I just think that the Bendix 2-speed is best transmission of all time

Philosophic note #2: coaster brakes RULE

First really good bike: 1970 PX-10e

Item sold to finance first really good bike: Lambretta 175cc scooter

Site of my first sewup purchase: Spence Wolf's garage

Site of my first fitting of cycling shorts: Spence Wolf's bathroom

Next really good bike: 1976 Eisentraut Limited - still have it - paint in good shape - decals in great shape -will trade for 24" short coupled Paramount frame - serious

Favorite job ever: Specialized 1982-1983

First duty at Specialized: unpack an order from Campagnolo

First item to be unpacked out of that order: a bag of those little blue rubber nipples that went on the prongs of the Campy pump head

Did I ride the Stumpjumper that's in the Smithsonian: yes - we all did

Next really good bike: 1982 SBC Allez - the San Rensho model - that Yoshi guy did nice work, eh?

Favorite bike of all time: 1980 Univega Gran Primero - just a production frame but Fabulous Road Feel

Bike I put more mile on than any other: a piece-o-crap Dawes frame with alloy rims and a Bendix coaster brake in the back - cost me about $35

Philosophic note #2B: it's all in the legs - get yourself a nice 72 inch gear and learn how to spin it

Current rider: 1960's Schwinn Super Sport w/ factory chrome, a Bendix coaster brake and an old Brooks saddle - the coaster brake was my addition

Favorite tire company: IRC

Heros: Eddy Merckx, Jonathan Boyer, Spence Wolf

Favorite moment on a bike: February 2, 1973, Yosemite Valley, having just arrived from Fresno and watching the snow begin to fall

Favorite moment off a bike: watching Eddy win in Paris in 1974 OR bumping into Eddy at Interbike in 1991 OR putzing in the Campy small parts drawers at Specialized

Favorite bike part: NR/SR brakes

Favorite bike shop: Cupertino Bike Shop in the 1970's, Palo Alto Bike shop in the 1980's and Terry Osell's shop since then

Favorite frame builders: Albert Eisentraut and that Goodrich kid - if you want a realy nice frame, buy a Rivendell custom and ask to have Curt Goodrich build it for you - no offense to you other guys but Curt is a freak'n wizard

Philosophic note #3: Leather saddles, friction shifter, toe clips and straps - Grant Peterson didn't invent this philosophy - I did

Philosophic note #4: Shimano sucks

Philosophic note #5: Alexi Grewal should have take his turn at the front in the 1984 Olympic road race - if he had, Bauer would have won

Philosophic note #6: lugs are cool - but if Eddy Merckx builds frames out of aluminum and carbon then those of us who love lugged steel should just swallow hard and embrace the new classics

Oldest memory: there was a bike shop in the town where I grew up - it was run by an old Italian guy - he didn't speak English - he sold Columbias - when you walked into the place, it smelled of grease and rubber and leather

I look forward to getting to know all of you a bit better.

Pump up your tires and watch out for cars,

Matthew Grimm Shakopee, Minnesota - home of the late Cecil Behringer's velodrome

ps:

My fantasy road bike:

Curt Goodrich Rivendell frame - 590mm - cream with a black H/T - matching Silca pump w/ Primus head
