It wasn't quite as bad as Chuck described, but not a whole lot better either. I know a couple of folks that have done it on the road for time trials and I't doesn't seem to help a whole lot.

Except for a little oil oozing around the axle when the wheel is laid on its side, its no dirtier than using grease. When the wheel is turning, the oil will be flung to the outside of the bearing race, and, if dustcaps are fitted, that's as far as it will go. Its debatable whether there is any measurable advantage to lubing with oil, but for track or dry weather, wheels, the disadvantages have been overstated.
