I think with the 3V it may have had something to do with the quality of
Excell tubing in particular, and most importantly that an oversize straight
gauge tube was readily available from them. I have a Steelman made of
"regular" Excell, and my impression is it's "better" than SL (in my 62 cm
frame size). One of the things they used to do at the Excell booth at the
trade shows, was squash a tube in a vice 'till it was nearly flat, then
release it and watch it pop back to normal (am I remembering that right?)
That wouldn't work with Columbus or Reynolds.
Masi seemed to prefer TTT. I'd sure like to hear more about why if someone
knows.
