I guess maybe the implication was that Eddy's fantastic record was due to his pioneering training methods, and ten or more guys in Lemonde's time had the same talent to go with modern training methods used by everyone. Like you, I don't buy this. I think Merckx was just in a class by himself physically, and particularly mentally. If he were in his prime today, I suspect he would dominate as thoroughly as he did then.
