I actually managed to collect from UPS for a damaged bike (it was insured). The front wheel was tacoed. I contacted the seller who contacted the shop that packed & shipped the bike. The shop contacted UPS and me to work up an estimate on the damage. It took a month or two but I did finally get a check for $150 (UPS paid the shop & the shop cut me a check). I believe the fact that it was professionally packed by a bike shop helped settle the claim. I have a feeling if it was packed and shipped by an individual, UPS would have contested the claim. Good luck. Save all the packing materials. Take plenty of photos to document the damage. Be persistant - it's my belief that they will balk on a claim if you don't put together a solid case.
