I had a machinist drill my 180 cranks for just such an application. If you check out http://home.ix.netcom.com/~santana/ and look at my MASI, you will see just the modification you are talking about. I chose the 74mm bolt pattern just so I could get a 28 chainring installed. A 36 seems like a waste of a triple. My NR derailleur (or Record or whatever) shifts the chain just fine. The small chainring is actually made by Specialized. I had to drill out the mounting holes so it would fit on the sholder of the bolts. It looks like a small Super Record chainring.

Does anyone have a sorce for the Campy chainring bolts that thread into the cranks? I only have 1 set, and am using them. I need to get at least two more sets. I could get you the exact Campy part numbers from cataloge 17.
