it's not common nowdays, but 27 years ago, most good bikes came equipped with tubulars. Once good clinchers were available (i.e. 90 psi and 1 1/8" width), a lot of folks decided to build up a set of 27" clinchers to supplement or replace the 700C tubulars that came on the bike. The clinchers weren't as nice as a good sew-up, but were a whole lot easier to patch.

Steve Kurt Peoria, IL (rode my '71 Raleigh International fixed gear 40 miles after work today. When it was new, the best clinchers were 70 psi and 1 1/4", iirc)
