Hi Scott, That brings back an old memory of my Mom catching me using one of her butter knives to gently separate a good tire from the rim (without ruining the tape). On the road I still carried an alloy tire iron even when running sew-ups. Some of the old glues got really brittle (Clement Red?) and I never had luck with just trying to pull the tire away from the rim. The mastic based glues might not need a tool.

P.S. I'm still on a high from a bike shop liquidation auction I attended yesterday. The place was a country bike shop, not anything high-end, but tons of vintage goods. He even had about 20 circa 1982 A-D Puchs still NIB/unassembled. I scored a few box lots of Cyclone derailleurs, crochet-back gloves, Winner freewheels, etc., all NOS. My Subaru wagon was pretty full and my total tab was only $121. Moral of the story: It may be worth checking for bike auctions near you...this is the third one within driving distance for me in the past 3 years.
