Yes, you're right on the mark about the about getting the rifling backwards. There is an urban legend about Pontiac once getting the rifling wrong on the rear-main crank seal and spinning oil into the transmission. Supposedly it resulted in one of these "secret" recalls. Perhaps the expert restorer of the on-ebay Campy bike once worked for Pontiac. In my own defense, I must admit that the Campy BB I just did was on a long-term rafter hanger with a triple, and it has the "Record" cups without rifling. Oops... I'd totally forgotten about the positional ramifications of the rifled newer style cups. Do you know, has a NR-cup configured triple axle ever been offered? I just perused three Campy cranks/rings; An undated, a diamond-3 and a diamond-9. They all seem to be anodized and, you're correct again, there are some differences in the finish. A Campy Rally, behind the triple, almost looks yellow. Do any of you techies have a clue as to allowable variations for "clear" anodizing (or whatever the Campy process is)?
