This is also one of the great uses for wire pipe cleaners. After a lifetime in the PacNW you learn all the tricks. One of the other tricks I learned under my tenure with Val at The Bikesmith was a great way to seal your BB. First install the BB and clean the outside of the cups and spindle with something like acetone to clean off all the oil and grease. Next put a very thin
layer of grease on just the BB spindle. lastly using a caulking gun
seal the edge between the cup and spindle with latex rubber. The rubber will stick to the cup and not to the spindle. It may sound hoaky but don't knock it until you try it, it works. enjoy, Brandon"monkeyman"Ives ------------------------------
What I have found, that works very well is this: Find the seals from 2 cartridge bearings, that JUST slide over the BB shaft. Clean the faces of the BB cups and seals with alcohol, then simply superglue the seals in place onto the cups. I have run this setup now for 13 years on my touring MTB, and by purging fresh grease through the BB shell once a year, via a pin hole, have never had to disassemble it, nor adjust it(old Shimano cup and cone XT BB)despite thousands of miles.
