Just to let folks know the scoop so far on the search for this particular axle. . . .
A number of folks have volunteered to check with their LBS to see if the 3U-B might be in stock there. Yes, it's listed at the Harris site, but it's not in stock, and the box where it's supposed to be on the shelf is turned upside down--an ominous sign. And a fitting sign at that: the supplier (Quality Bike Parts) has ceased to supply it. Sadness.
Of course, the 3U-B is still listed in the QBP catalog, so if anyone checks with their local shop, the staff there will likely tell you they can order it. And that's not a bad thing, perhaps: if enough folks try to order such a spindle, maybe QBP will perceive a demand for the part and decide to restock it.
For those of you who aren't familiar with the 3U-B, it's an odd little spindle. It's a bolt-type axle for 68mm BBs, with an overall length of 124.5. The left side measures 32mm, but the right (drive) side measures 40.5mm. From what I can tell, it's pretty much the spindle required for the Sugino AT, a venerable vintage triple crank from the early 80s.
I guess this is the way of the world, that cartridge BBs are pretty much the de facto technology now. But I like the idea of being able to replace spindles, and I'm guessing lots of you out there feel the same way. Yes, I know that some folks on the CR list embrace the new technology, and with good reason. But I think there's equally good reason to hold on to the ability to replace one part--in this case, the axle--and tailor a BB for one's changing needs and/or desires.
And there's nothing else out there in the cartridge BB world that really complements a Sugino AT. Sadness.
ANYway, if anyone else wants to join in the hunt for a 3U-B spindle, I and a few others would be very interested in what you can turn up.
