Greeting's to the List, I was watching the History Channel last night, the program was on the birth of aircraft carriers. There were films of the first ever launch of an airplane from the deck of a ship.
The deck was improvised and so was the life jacket on the pilot, it consisted of two tubular tires, one was the classic figure eight around the shoulders the other was simply wrapped around his waist twice. Simple but effective, I guess.
The year was 1914, and the tires were quite fat.
