Hello Bob and CR members;

I think that the first Deore group appeared late 1980. Preliminary announcement Information before sale has appeared in the Japanese bicycle magazine "New Cycling" April 1980 issue. The first advertisement has probably appeared "New Cycling" magazine October or November 1980 issue (sorry I lost October 1980 issue).

November 1980 advertisement: http://www12.xdsl.ne.jp/~fuseken/cycle_temp/deore_nov80.jpg

December 1980 advertisement: http://www12.xdsl.ne.jp/~fuseken/cycle_temp/deore_dec80.jpg

January 1981 advertisement: http://www12.xdsl.ne.jp/~fuseken/cycle_temp/deore_jan81.jpg

February 1981 advertisement: http://www12.xdsl.ne.jp/~fuseken/cycle_temp/deore_feb81.jpg

The first Deore is the group for touring bicycle. I think that since most of Japanese touring bicycle of those days was a French style (wide-ratio gears, carrier for handlebar bag and duralmin madguards etc), Shimano developed it for the French style touring bicycle (randonneur). You will find the French style touring bicycle at advertisement of the Deore group.
