A number of chance occurences have just met in the vicinty of my Moto Grand Record. First, I've got a Stronglight 93 which has the guard on it -- the big shiny ninja pants guard. That piece occupies the outer shoulder of the spider, and the inner ring of the double is pushed into a position equivalent to the inner ring of a triple.
I'm actually sort of fond of that outer guard. I wish I had the perfect bike to put it on - probably a nice Raleigh. A gentleman's Raleigh Pro. In the absence of that bike, however, that setup gives me the option of running a triple instead of a double.
Next, last night, I installed my new, cool, shiny, smooooooth Spidel BB. Turns out that the drive-side of the spindle is surprising long, and I could now clear a triple. (Chainline is acceptable.) So.... let's say that I reduce the rear cog size a bit (currently a 26), and add an inner ring. I'm curious how the NR f der would handle that. Looks to me like there would be clearance. (I know, there may also be r der issues.... I'll handle them when I get to them, and I have the technology.) Which brings me to two questions.
-- What was commonly used as a Campy f der, with Campy triples? Campy obviously made a number of generations of long cage rear ders. Were there long cage f ders to go with those, of which I am unaware? (What was the typical Campy triple inner ring -- 36, wasn't it?) -- And, does anyone have a smaller-than-42 Stronglight 93 ring, with which they would be willing to part? Maybe a 36? Maybe a 38? I don't know what the small ring size limitation is on a 93. A 38 might would be kind'a purpose-defeating, although I'd certainly have lots of gears.
