When it comes to "good" bikes, I have no doubt that all stays need to be the correct length. However, I have found that it is easier to get the rear wheel into some sort of workable position on crappy bikes with horizontal drops, than on crappy bikes w/ vertical drops. But, I suppose this list isn't really about crappy bikes...
