From personal experience over 42 years of hard touring and racing I am a avid fan of vertical fork-ends. There neater. They make wheel removal easy when racing, or in lousy weather when touring. They stop the wheel pulling over. Campag Verticals are not worth mentioning. The best are by Suntour, Shimano and Takahashi. Columbus and Tecnociclo are also reasonable. Verticals distinct advantage is in having short tangs, the bit that brazes into the chainstay, I was always told by the top British builders that this made the rear triangle stiffer. A lot of second rate builders are not so keen on verticals as they are more difficult to braze, greater accuracy needed. Normal type road-ends have one distinct advantage, the gear hanger is shorter, this is the distance from wheel axle to the mounting screw hole of the gear. We all know from years of riding, that the neatness of gear changing is dependent on how far the rear mechs top jockey wheel is from the blocks sprockets.This is why the long Campag 1010are now obsolete thank heavens and short ends are the norm.
