I think either option (modernizing or not) is probably OK in this case. Is it a particularly rare Masi with a beautifully-done, "correct" refinishing? If so, I'd tend not to mess with it. Otherwise, go for it.

One other option you might consider is re-spacing to 128. You can then run either 126.5 or 130 hubs fairly easily. Many frames came this way during the mid-'80s when the rear hub "standard" was changing from 126.5 to 130mm.
