I recall hearing that Sugino spec'd 171mm on the Mighty to avoid patent infringement on the very similar NR. I like your explanation better.

A bit odd yes (well, it ain't even!) but it's just a 6-3/4" crank (the pre-metric standard English crank length) translated into millimeters.
