Another major advantage of these levers is that they have one of the largest barrels meaning that the cable moves more for a small movement of the lever. On tandems with long and stretchy cables, this is an advantage. I have them mounted on my Bob Jackson tandem and have used them for over 20 years.

During the 80s, I got in the habit of splitting barcon sets for tandems and touring singles, using the Shimano counter-spring unit, which has a very large wrap diameter, for the triple chainring shifter; and a Suntour ratchet unit for its better control of the back. Alas, I only have one of the Shimanos left... They seem to have been much less common than the even more elegant SunTours.
