I'm wondering if most people aren't actually sensitive to changes in saddle height? That's the case for me. From what I've seen, many people set up their saddle height based on the distance from the bottom bracket spindle, without considering crank length. In my case, if I keep a constant distance from the top of the pedal (at Bottom Dead Center) to the top of the saddle, I really can't tell the difference between a 165mm, a 170mm or a 172.5mm crank. This is the case even though there are differences in deflection of the knee when the pedal is at Top Dead Center. Yet, for a given crankset, I am sensitive to changes in saddle height - at least until I become accustomed to the change. Now, you may ask "What does this have to do with classic bikes in particular?" Well, Eddie Merckx was also sensitive to changes in saddle height and he rode a (now) classic De Rosa. Other than that, there's none. So I'll stop now. Ciao. Regards, Fred Rednor - Arlington, Virginia
