Subject: [CR]Thanks Jan and VBQ.

I'm not one to take other people's advice on bike setup very well but in this case. . . In the first issue of VBQ Jan has an article on who needs a triple chainring set-up. This is advice I'd given lots of folks, and even set up Mitzi's 70s Trek with two smaller rings (48-34). Even my early wrenching mentor Val Kleitz ran a 50-34 and a wide spread FW. Maybe I just though I was too much of a "serious cyclist" but I always felt I needed a 52 big ring. Well rereading VBQ #1 was the final straw and I put a 48-34 TA crank on my bike. This replaced the Campagnolo 53-39 I had on my bike before.

This new set-up combined with a 13-24 6-speed FW is great and gets me everywhere I'll ever want to take this bike. Sure it may not get me up Mt. Shasta fully loaded, but it's set up as a faux-French rando bike anyway. The other bonus is it allowed me to use a too short Regina Oro chain that's just been sitting in my parts box for years. WOO HOO! I found the path to salvation and all I had to do was get over my ego. Now if I can only get over being sick so I can got on the Rose Bowl ride for a shakedown. ciao, Brandon"monkeyman"Ives Santa Barbara, Calif.
