When Desgrange first let derailleurs into the TdF in 1937, it was an Osgear Super Champion that featured an indexing 4-speed quadrant shifter on the down tube. Before '37 it was a two cog freewheel on each side of the wheel (4-speed) and you turned (flipped) the wheel around.
