Well- I did try this once, when I was about 16 or so. The whole episode can be filed under "Stupid bike tricks". I dont know where, but I had heard the glove thing too, and totally misunderstood it.

I had found a Phillips 10 speed frame in the trash, and put it together with other junk parts. It wasn't fixed gear, just single speed, no brakes(and only half a headset too) Since I was impatient to ride it, and didn't want to wait to find some brakes, I made up a glove with a piece of inner tube glued and stapled on. It worked great once. The second time the whole thing came apart, with predictable results. Fortunately I didn't crash, and decided to wait for brakes.
