Howdy, All,

I regret reading that Jan and the former list-member are experiencing friction.

Frankly, I can understand why Jan would seek to alert list-members to what he perceived as a gross insult. In addition to wanting to protect himself in these litigious times from any taint of misrepresenting the Carmingent, he may have wanted to alert other list-members to what happens should you upset the former list-member. People appreciate knowing that they may expect.

On the other hand, I would probably recommend going through Dale first just to preserve the civility of the list. I would also add that Dale, whom I cannot praise enough, has not publicly censured Mr. Heine.

I guess the saddest part of this mess is that reminds us of the loss of Ken Denny's knowledge from the list. While many can argue with his manners, no one can dispute his knowledge. On the occasions when Mr. Denny's posts stuck to historical information, few posts approached the depth of knowledge shown in his. His post on the Carmingent was truly great.

Unfortunately, Mr. Denny has chosen not to remain a participant on the list for his own reasons. I just hope no one ends up driving the very knowledgeable and polite Mr. Heine to same decision.

Finally, to answer Bruce Robbins, I see nothing legally actionable nor ethically dodgy in publishing an e-mail sent to him. If anyone sends you a letter, you can show it to anyone. Of course, gentlemen and ladies don't kiss and tell--they don't reveal the contents of love letters and such, but then correspondence in question was hardly a love letter. If you don't want your correspondence quoted or published on the internet, don't make it quote-worthy and don't send it via e-mail.

Classic content: rode the Meral today for the first time this year. Brakes need tuning but a nifty bike still. Just wish there was not so much toeclip overlap with fenders and my size 47 canoes.

Regards,

John Taglia Chicago
