I would not go so far as to say "hideous" etc., but actually they were not that well constructed..

If you examine the the right hand crank carefully, you will see that in order to fit the "bent" arm into the spider pattern, it required machining the two component parts separately, arms and spider.. That meant they had to be joined at the "hub" or center and to do that PMP had to resort to "swaging" or crimping them together like cheapo cranks. Not good for stiffness nor longevity and not excellent build quality in bicycle engineering parlance...
