The 8 in the PC-48 indicates that is is a 8 speed chain. These chains work well with 6,7 and 8 speed cogs and cassettes. The 58 and 68 are higher quaility. Saw where Lance goes through 3 chains in the tour. Chains are cheaper than rings or cogs, I put a new one on when it gets to 12 1/16 inches pin to pin. My bikes are riders. I suppose I might let authenticity interfere with rideability for a really significant bike, but I don't have one of those. My two Colnagos both have 14-28 6-speed Shimano hyperglide freewheels and PC48 chains. One has NR and the other SR derailleurs. Both shift very nicely, far better than any of the period components I've seen.
