Don: I was recently at a local Bike Expo at the Cyclodrome in Bostons South End. The purpose of the Expo was to showcase all the latest technology for Bostonians, and most of the more prominant bike shops in the Greater Boston area set up booths to show off all the latest and greatest. I was there with a table to promote my show at Larz Anderson. Frankly, once you check out all the latest, it becomes very boring. There is little to no artistry to 99% of all frames produced today, but fortunately, Peter Mooney of Belmont Wheelwork had two of his gorgious creations on display. They are not as ornate as a Brian Baylis or a Columbine, but simple, elegant and beautiful to look at. I brought a 1950 Freddy Grubb Allrounder to the show on Saturday, and a Hetchins Curly to the show for display on Sunday. For the three day event, about 5-6000 attended, and my beautiful vintage pieces were passed by most. Unfortunately, the majority of people seem more entranced with modern flash than the artistry of older frames. If we held a show on a lawn in San Diego and put 10-20 modern alloy or carbon frames accross the lawn from 10-20 cycle frames by Brian Baylis, Peter Mooney, Richard Moon etc, I'd like to see which direction most people would head to.
