I believe the previous posts this morning from Joel and others correctly described it as a Schwinn item from the mid-1970s. It was alleged to improve front shifting over a wide chainring gap between middle and outer (40x54t or thereabouts if I recall), but my impression of it while setting the bikes up for sale at a Schwinn shop wasn't very favorable compared to a normal TA configuration. Though not too common back then, it is not a home-brew mod, nor an assembly error as you suspect. At any rate, they came from an era a few years before there were any narrow chains to worry about; a standard Sedis or Union chain was stock equipment if I recall. Overall, a product "improvement" from Schwinn probably best forgotten, IMHO. Would Dave Staub know more about these?
