Roughly about 1952 is the date of manufacture for these splined cotterless chain sets. There is a mention of them in The Complete Cyclist by R.J.Way published in 1952, on page 55 "A new Gnuutti chainset is now being produced. "It conforms to their usual pattern, but is not attached by cotters, the axle and cranks being serrated. The axle bolts which tighten up the cranks are adjusted by an Allen key".My first experience of these cotterless cranks was in late 1960 when I was given a set of these cranks by an older club mate. I did my first evening 10 on them recording a long 27 at the age of thirteen, the event was won in the winning time of 25min. 06secs. They were very handy on club runs due to their dreadful reputation of forever coming loose on their axles, when the going got really tough you could always signal a halt to tighten them up with the Allen key, useful for schoolboys taking a hammering.
