Joe Starck, whose memory goes back almost two months, perceptively asks about relative funkiness:

"Larry - How might Scott McCaskey's 1960 Schwinn Varsity score against Harvey Sach's Ted Williams Sears in your newly proposed "...wow, do we have a category/gasp, THEME? starting for next year?????.." (See Scott's post below; I think it could be an entry in your "Funk" category) - Joe Starck, Sun Prairie, Wisconsin"

I can't answer for Scott, but his awesome restoration speaks for itself (I'm so out of it that I would have restored a Continental, instead, missing the point). Scott's done a fabulous restoration, whether it's your cup of tea or not. In contrast, my Ted Williams Sport Racing has a very different approach to Funk. It is very close to the ensemble that Sears sold, but it has patina -- I did not try to get NOS parts, or to refinish it. Scott has attained a different, purer, and perhaps higher form of funk: recreating something ordinary as it was when new. Mine's just the funk of a snapshot at a different stage in the life of a bike: after surviving one or two teens and a lot of service. Now, if I could just find the right (non-gold-anodized) brake levers! And pix from Steve Kinney, so I can see what one really looked like rather than relying on my memory. but, heck it was worth bringing to cirque for the smiles it got, and worth riding for the pure fun of it.

Ok Folks, don't laugh, but I just finished restoring my 1960 Schwinn Varsity. Why this bike...when I have a barn full of Paramounts? Well, 1960 was the first year for the Varsity. Secondly, it is a 8 speed bicycle (4 in the rear) with a Simplex Tour de France rear derailleur and Simplex "Suicide" front derailleur. A Varsity is what brought me into adult cycling...and probably many of you. Who hasn't owned a Varsity at one time or another. This was Schwinn's first entry into a road bicycle for the mass's.
