The person who posted the original question mentioned play "between the body and the cogs." Probably he was really referring to play in the body, between the inner and outer parts of the body itself. That is, play in the bearing. That's what all the responses have addressed, and that's where you usually see problems. However there are a couple of things to beware of. Somethimes splined cogs don't fit precisely on the body or are incorrectly installed. In such circumstances cogs can be "jiggly," shifting around in a plane perpendicular to the hub axle, and knocking with each revolution of the wheel. It's rare, but I had this problem recently with an NOS Suntour New Winner 6-speed. Sometimes bodies knock, even when all the correct shims are in there, there is the right amount of play, no wear, the cover plate is tight, etc. I've seen brand-new Regina CX's with this problem. It went away when the owner switched from Sturmey Archer oil to Phil Wood oil (which is far more viscous). Still the problem with the Maillard is probably within the body... Tom DaltonBethlehem, PA
