It is not so much age or era of the bike but what gauge tubing (from whichever manufacturer) the bike company~builder chose to use on that particular model...Columbus and Reynolds alike could have been a range of gauges, each having a different I.D. Is is true that in more recent years lighter gauges became the norm and 27.2 was most common. And this excludes the separate consideration of French and Spanish bikes that had "metric" sized tubing... If the seat lug clamping area isn't too boogered up, one of those slide-in sizing tools works pretty well.
