List,

Most of the classic manufacturers created strategic partnerships with certain brands, and their image grew together, exceptions of product shortages aside, and will forever be associated together.

Look at E-Ritchies website, It's still : TTT, Vittoria, Campagnolo, and probally would be Regina freewheels if he used 'em.

Does that mean you can't put an ITM stem on your Richard Sachs?

I agree that a Mavic group on a Cinelli is just weird.

The French did the best at creating an interesting mix of parts that go together well, maybe becuase there was no defalut "group" of choice.

I understand catalog-factory-stock, and appreciate it, but sometimes I have personal preferences that just suit my own style. I have Mavic rims instead of NISI on a Colnago, and a San Marco saddle on a Bianchi, instead of a Selle Italia. So shoot me.

I draw the line at pink Ame hoods, which were silly in the 80's, and still are.

Thank you, that was the kind of answer I was looking. Even though I don't agree with it, and from some of my off-list responses I'm not the only one. I do understand your view and it is totally valid. You are looking at it from the perspective of the manufacturer's intent. So how do you see bikes that are sold as frames only and then built up at the shop with parts requested by the customer? Also what if you buy a NOS bike and the bike is different from the catalog spec? This is why my view comes from the customers perspective because it takes these things into account, not that my version of original is the 100% correct one. It's just my view.
