I have a couple of friends who have managed to "de-zone"
their DVD players to play French CDs which are also Zone 2. It
seems to be most easily done on cheaper machines.
There are web sites devoted to the technique. E.g.

This site is in the UK but I've been on others that are US
based and several French ones. For whatever the reason, the
latter seem to be the most comprehensive, so you might look
there even if you don't like Chirac's comments about the war in
Iraq. If you know English and any other Romance language
(which I know is true in Aldo's case), the French isn't too
difficult to understand.
