When I started riding derailleur bikes in '62, 32/40 was standard on
British bikes at all levels, while 36/36 seemed nearly universal
everywhere else. This seems to go back a long time. The only 36 hole
Sturmey hubs I can remember were on Schwinns; all the British bikes used
40 -- until the Moulton small-wheel.
