Pretty much every one of the folks whos names grace downtubes today
worked for someone else yesterday. Also many builders do side work for
other companies even after they've made a name for themselves. Curt G.
builds both under his own name and Rivendell. Personally I'm more
interested in people building under someone else's label or the early
work before they hung out their own shingle. I'm more interested in an
e-richie or JPW built Witcomb than something that has their name on the
downtube. With that said I'd say less than 10% of the great
framebuilders have ever built under their own name. Jack Taylors are
built by Norman and Singers are built by Ernest Csuka.
