Along about 1971 , or 1972 , there was a big-deal bicycle race held in downtown Corpus Christi , Texas , U.S.A .
Somehow the bicycle-shop business-owners talked the city authorities , and city planners , into taking it seriously .
They shut down Shoreline Drive , for the "Bayfront Criterium" .
John Howard showed up , the captain of the Crescent Team , riding for Crescent Bicycles , wearing Team Crescent jerseys , and riding on those orange-orange Crescents .
When John Howard won , by a long lead , even after slowing up just a little , to let the others catch up just a bit , his grand prize , for first place was . . .
. . . a brand new , top-of-the-line , orange , Crescent bicycle , donated by Bike South , the largest bicycle shop in Corpus Christi at the time . Irony .
( this was just around the time that I bought my Frejus-Legnano from Bike South , what a showroom color combination - chartreuse and orange !! )
The only old issues I have handy , May 1977 , and August 1977 , of Bicycling Magazine , show John Howard very prominently , in the Exxon Graftek G-1 advertisements ( wearing a Cool Gear jersey by the way . . . ) .
