I was a rock 'n' roll road manager in the 60s for Michael Bloomfield, The Electric Flag, BS&T and others and when i think how we treated those "classic" guitars (and drums, Brian). Michael never used a hard case for his Les Paul (Sunburst, humbucking pickups, probably worth $20k today). Eventually it started spliting down the tuning machines but he wouldn't let me get it fixed. Finally when the splits hit the second fret I just didn't give it back to him after a gig and a true artist named Minor Wilson repaired it.
