This is something I've explored for a number of customers at work.

There really isn't a way to do it by modifying the hub spacing, there isn't anything on a 9 speed rear to take out! One has to also consider what might happen to chainline alignment. Our wheel builder wasn't comfortable with the structural stability of a wheel with practically vertical dish to it.

I know you've said you don't want to change the spacing of the frame from 120 to 130, but if you are dead set on going modern stuff, that really is your only option to do it right.

Is it an issue of wanting more gears, more range, or Ergo/STI style shifting?
