Coldsetting the rear triangle is no big deal and in most cases won't do any noticible harm. Some caveats: First don't try this at home. Take it to a frame builder or experienced mechanic. Even with the proper measuring tools, it requires a certain feel which (IMO) only comes with experience. The idea is to get it right (or close) on the "first shot". If you get it past where you want it to be then bend it back and forth 'till you get it where you want it you'll be doing some nasty damage to your frame. Be aware of possible disaster. Chainstay or brake bridges can crack neccesitating a repair and repaint. Finally I would NEVER consider doing this with the intention of maybe putting it back to the narrower spacing in the future.
