Subject: [CR]seat post bolt question

A note to anyone who might rush out and replace the 13mm (1/2"???) bolt on their NSR post with the 6mm Allen-head bolt from the C-rec:

There were two types of C-rec seat binder bolts. The early ones had the 1.0 mm pitch and were interchangeable with Nuovo Super Record (NSR). The later ones (circa 1990 and later, and even more OT) had a coarser thread, I believe they were 1.25mm pitch. Unless you also replace the upper clamp piece, the new bolt won't work. Most, if not all, of the new bolts had a dull (cadmium?) plating wheras all the earlier bolts were chromed.

While I, like Chuck and others, have had no problems with slippage with this type of post, I know people who have. Heavier riders are more likely to experience slippage, but I think it also depends on where you sit relative to the clamp. For eaxmple, if you push the saddle forward (clamping at the back of the rail) and then sit on the nose, there will be a lot of torque around the clamp. Slip-city. I know one guy who used those posts for years on the road without a problem, but when he used one on this pursuit bike (where he tended to sit "on the rivet" he had slippage. The 6mm bolt was worse because it didn't allow him to tighten things as much as the 13mm hex bolt, but there was a problem either way.

For the hip ticket to super-stardom, there is an alloy Cinelli bolt with a 6mm Allen head. It looks like a short 1-R stem binder. You could actually make one from a 1-R stem binder, a hacksaw, file and the correct die. In any case, it is not a good choice unless you are pretty light and tend to sit over the clamp.
