Working the mechanism with the compound in there would create parallel scratches in the same direction. It would make a lot more sense to put the valve-grinding compound in there and just tighten the assembly in the desired position and leave it. The grit in the compound should keep it from slipping.

An old trick to keep tools like screwdrivers from slipping is to dip the working faces in valve grinding compound. It gives the tool a little more bite into the fastener. Most experienced auto mechanics have one of those green Clover tins stashed in their toolboxes.
