Fit a brake to the front wheel only provided you're not going to flip/flop to a freewheel. Drum brakes are fine but a bit heavy. Better, IMNSHO, is a brake that clamps to the front fork like a Resillion cantilever or one of the '30s bolt-on calipers. Another option is temporarily (or even permanently) using a cyclocross fork with cantilever bosses and a modern cantilever brake. Good luck.
